Sensex continues flat trade; Realty, PSU, power rise

Indian equities are trading flat amid volatility on Monday. Realty, PSU and power stocks gained ground. However, consumer durables and IT stocks witnessed a fall.

At 11.51 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 41.08 points or 0.21% at 19,509.23 with 18 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 10.35 points or 0.18% at 5,897.75 with 32 components gaining.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 28.10 points or 0.14% at 19,496.25, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 1.25 points or 0.02%, at 5,888.65.

Sensex Movers

Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed rise of 21.13 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Reliance Industries (10.5 points), H D F C Bank (9.29 points), Hindustan Unilever (9.23 points) and Larsen & Toubro (8.19 points).

However, Tata Consultancy Services contributed fall of 10.79 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (10.41 points), Infosys (5.87 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.88 points) and Tata Power Company (1.27 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Hindustan Unilever (1.57%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.44%), NTPC (0.90%), Larsen & Toubro (0.87%), Tata Steel (0.78%), and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.74%).

On the other hand, Coal India (1.83%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.20%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.08%), Tata Power Company (0.67%), I T C (0.53%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.38%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.51% and 0.54% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allcargo Logistics (2.42%), Allahabad Bank (1.35%), Alstom India (1%), Aban Offshore (0.88%) and A B G Shipyard (0.37%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aanjaneya Lifecare (7.76%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (1.23%), Aarti Industries (1.16%), Action Construction Equipment (0.36%) and Styrolution ABS (India) (0.14%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 2,073.99, up by 37.36 points or by 1.83%. The major gainers were D L F (4.08%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.76%), Anant Raj (2.41%), Godrej Properties (0.93%) and Indiabulls Real Estate (0.35%).

The PSU index was at 7,340.82, up by 53.67 points or by 0.74%. The major gainers were Bank Of India(1.67%), Allahabad Bank (1.35%), Andhra Bank (0.79%), Balmer Lawrie & Company (0.46%) and Bank Of Baroda (0.43%).

On the other hand, the Consumer Durables index was at 7,197.71, down by 44 points or by 0.61%. The major losers were Titan Industries (1.68%), Whirlpool Of India (1.14%), V I P Industries (0.47%) and Gitanjali Gems (0.15%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,380 advances against 1,009 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

A B G Shipyard topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 465.75 million. It was followed by Jet Airways (India) (Rs. 248.80 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 219.38 million) and United Spirits (Rs. 164.90 million).

The volume chart was led by Kingfisher Airlines with trades of over 3.10 million shares. It was followed by Cals Refineries (2.51 million), Suzlon Energy (2.32 million) and Karuturi Global (1.45 million).
