Sensex ends slightly lower; Oil & Gas, IT fall

Indian marketssettled marginally loweron Friday. Heavy selling was seen in oil & gas, IT and healthcare stocks while auto, banking and FMCG gained. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex lost 29.03 pointsor 0.15% at 19,468.15 with 16 components registering drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty fell by 9.55 pointsor 0.16% at 5,887.40 with 29 components posting drop.Sensex Movers
Reliance Industries contributed fall of 21.78 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (15.79 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (8.35 points), I C I C I Bank (5.11 points) and Grasim Industries (4.01 points).
However, Tata Motors contributed rise of 15.77 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Bharti Airtel (6.19 points), State Bank Of India (6.16 points), Reliance Communications (5 points) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (3.39 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Motors (2.48%), Tata Power Company (1.79%), Bharti Airtel (1.23%), Sterlite Industries (India) (1.22%), G A I L (India) (0.99%), and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.94%).
On the other hand, Dr Reddy's Laboratories (3.55%), Bajaj Auto (2.06%), Tata Steel (1.21%), Reliance Industries (1.20%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.19%), and Infosys (0.99%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Midcap settled higher 18.45 points or 0.28% at 6,626.86 however the BSE Smallcap dropped 42.15 points or 0.64% at 6,540.92 at the closing.The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allahabad Bank(1.79%), Andhra Bank (1.29%), A I A Engineering (0.94%), Anant Raj (0.59%) and A B G Shipyard (0.49%).The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were Aanjaneya Lifecare (6.98%), Action Construction Equipment (6.38%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (6.08%), Aarti Industries (2.12%) and Trident (1.14%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Oil & Gas index was at 8,905.11, down by 97.79 points or by 1.09%. The major losers were Cairn India (2.61%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (1.87%), Petronet LNG (1.09%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (0.97%) and Indian Oil Corporation (0.4%).
The IT index was at 6,466.91, down by 48.45 points or by 0.74%. The major losers were Mahindra Satyam (1.47%), Infosys (0.99%), H C L Technologies (0.98%), Tech Mahindra (0.92%) and Oracle Financial Services Software (0.41%).
On the other hand, the Auto index was at 10,816.90, up by 27.30 points or by 0.25%. The major gainers were Bharat Forge (3.24%), Tata Motors (2.48%) and Hero Motocorp (0.05%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 1,194 advances against 1,723 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 866.86 million. It was followed by Jet Airways (India) (Rs. 603.45 million), Reliance Capital (Rs. 561.73 million) and United Spirits (Rs. 532.49 million).
The volume chart was led by Suzlon Energy with trades of over 15.70 million shares. It was followed by Birla Cotsyn (India) (8.22 million), TV18 Broadcast (5.24 million) and Unitech (4.99 million).
