Sensex down 35 points; Bharti, Wipro, Tata Motors plunge

Indian equities slipped in the post noon trade on Thursdaydespite lower than expected inflation numbers. BSE Midcap and Smallcap index underperformed the benchmark indices. Auto, capital goods and consumer durables stocks led the decline.
At 1.00 pm, the Sensex was trading down 34.72 points or 0.18% at 19,573.36 with 18 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 18.70 points or 0.32% at 5,914.25 with 33 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 18.73 points or 0.10% at 19,626.81, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 0.25 points or 0.00%, at 5,933.20.
Sensex Movers
Reliance Industries contributed fall of
19.15 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Bharti Airtel (18.31
points), Tata Motors (16.18 points), Larsen & Toubro (13.7
points) and I C I C I Bank (10.45 points).
However, H D F C Bank contributed rise of 16.21 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (14.71 points), Hindustan Unilever (13.67 points), Tata Consultancy Services (12.75 points) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (9.55 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Hindustan Unilever (2.37%), Tata Consultancy Services (1.29%), G A I L (India) (1.25%), Coal India (1.21%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.21%), and H D F C Bank (1.11%).
On the other hand, Bharti Airtel (3.63%), Wipro (2.73%), Tata Motors (2.53%), Maruti Suzuki India (2.49%), Dr Reddy"S Laboratories (1.92%), and Hero Motocorp (1.59%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts declining -1.11% and -1.41% respectively.The major losers in the BSE Midcap were A I A Engineering (3.18%), A B G Shipyard (2.15%), Alstom India (2.08%), Aban Offshore (1.56%) and CORE Education and Technologies (1.18%).The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were Action Construction Equipment (5.71%), Adhunik Metaliks (4.12%), Styrolution ABS (India) (3.91%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (3.46%) and Aarti Industries (1.56%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Auto index was at 10,786.88, down by 165.87 points or by 1.51%. The major losers were Ashok Leyland (1.73%), Exide Industries (1.72%), Hero Motocorp (1.59%), Bajaj Auto (1.1%) and Bharat Forge (0.75%).
The Capital Goods index was at 9,878.07, down by 125.29 points or by 1.25%. The major losers were A I A Engineering (3.18%), Alstom India (2.08%), BEML (1.56%), A B B (1.47%) and Bharat Electronics (1.12%).
On the other hand, the IT index was at 6,531.31, up by 33.52 points or by 0.52%. The major gainers were Tata Consultancy Services (1.29%), Infosys (0.91%), Tech Mahindra (0.82%) and H C L Technologies (0.24%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 740 advances against 1,860 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,663.01 million. It was followed by United Spirits (Rs. 445.17 million), Tata Steel (Rs. 315.45 million) and Reliance Capital (Rs. 308.26 million).
The volume chart was led by TV18 Broadcast with trades of over 8.75 million shares. It was followed by Unitech (6.33 million), Suzlon Energy (3.00 million) and Reliance Communications (2.64 million).
