Sensex trades sluggish; FMCG, Metal drop

Indian markets continue to trades flat towards closing on Friday. BSE Midcap and Smallcap index underperformed the benchmark indices. Metal, FMCG and PSU stocks witnessed profit booking whilecapital goodsandIT gained.

At 2.14 pm, the Sensex was trading up 6.06 points or 0.03% at 19,586.38 with 13 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 8.55 points or 0.14% at 5,930.25 with 35 components falling.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a decline of 3.13 points or 0.02% at 19,577.19, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 9.70 points or 0.16%, at 5,929.10.

Sensex Movers

Tata Consultancy Services contributed rise of 27.57 points in the Sensex. It was followed by H D F C Bank (18.49 points), Larsen & Toubro (15.83 points), Bharti Airtel (6.79 points) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (4.65 points).

However, I T C contributed fall of 23.19 points in the Sensex. It was followed by State Bank Of India (7.1 points), Hindustan Unilever (4.74 points), Sterlite Industries (India) (4.73 points) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (4.14 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Consultancy Services (2.99%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.06%), Larsen & Toubro (1.60%), NTPC (1.45%), Bharti Airtel (1.33%), and H D F C Bank (1.31%).

On the other hand, Cipla (3.44%), Sterlite Industries (India) (2.39%), Coal India (1.69%), Dr Reddy"S Laboratories (1.60%), Maruti Suzuki India (1.26%), and I T C (1.17%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts declining -0.30% and -0.50% respectively.The major losers in the BSE Midcap were Aban Offshore (2.45%), A I A Engineering (1.42%), A B G Shipyard (0.96%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.6%) and Alstom India (0.35%).The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (8.15%), Adhunik Metaliks (4.61%), Styrolution ABS (India) (3%), Aanjaneya Lifecare (2.35%) and Action Construction Equipment (2.31%).

Sectors in Limelight

The FMCG index was at 5,817.56, down by 59.67 points or by 1.02%. The major losers were Godrej Consumer Products (1.3%), I T C (1.18%), Hindustan Unilever (0.76%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) (0.56%) and Dabur India (0.53%).

The Metal index was at 10,165.92, down by 74.78 points or by 0.73%. The major losers were Coal India (1.63%), Hindustan Zinc (0.8%), Hindalco Industries (0.62%), Jindal Steel & Power (0.39%) and Bhushan Steel (0.14%).

The HC index was at 7,917.88, down by 41.2 points or by 0.52%. The major losers were Cipla (3.43%), Dr Reddy"S Laboratories (1.51%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.29%), Aurobindo Pharma (0.19%) and Divis Laboratories (0.01%).

On the other hand, the Capital Goods index was at 10,230.95, up by 111.85 points or by 1.11%. The major gainers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.04%), Alstom T&D India (1.1%), F A G Bearings India (0.77%), BEML (0.44%) and Havell"S India (0.38%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,100 advances against 1,618 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Indiabulls Financial Services topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 5,234.17 million. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (Rs. 640.07 million), NTPC (Rs. 607.19 million) and State Bank Of India (Rs. 603.53 million).

The volume chart was led by Indiabulls Financial Services with trades of over 18.36 million shares. It was followed by Suzlon Energy (5.18 million), NTPC (4.04 million) and Kingfisher Airlines (3.96 million).
