Sensex trades sluggish ahead of F&O expiry

Indian equities continue to trade sluggish ahead of F&O expiry today. BSE Midcap and Smallcap index outperformed the benchmark indices. ICICI Bank results will be declared today. Metal,oil & gas and IT stocks witnessed profit booking, while realty and PSU stocks gained.
At 11.01 a.m., the Sensex was trading down 45.63 points or 0.23% at 19,959.37 with 20 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 6.75 points or 0.11% at 6,049 with 27 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a decline of 17.72 points or 0.09% at 19,987.28, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 10.10 points or 0.17%, at 6,045.65.
Sensex Movers
Reliance Industries contributed fall of 22.25 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (11.07 points), Infosys (7.79 points), Tata Motors (7.69 points) and Housing Development Finance Corporation (7.35 points).
However, I T C contributed rise of 12.71 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (9.58 points), Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.87 points), Bharti Airtel (3.41 points) and Maruti Suzuki India (1.96 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bajaj Auto (2.13%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.69%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.12%), Maruti Suzuki India (0.73%), I T C (0.66%), and Bharti Airtel (0.61%).
On the other hand, Tata Power Company (1.35%), Reliance Industries (1.17%), Tata Motors (1.15%), Hindustan Unilever (1.12%), Sterlite Industries (India) (0.96%), and Wipro (0.76%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.23% and 0.10% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Alstom India (1.44%), Aban Offshore (1.07%), Apollo Tyres (0.99%), Hexaware Technologies (0.75%) and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.43%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Trident (0.66%), Aanjaneya Lifecare (0.36%), Adhunik Metaliks (0.27%), Aegis Logistics (0.24%) and Aarti Industries (0.2%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Realty index was at 2,223.85, up by 15.73 points or by 0.71%. The major gainers were Phoenix Mills (1.68%), D L F (1.25%), Indiabulls Real Estate (1.06%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (0.66%) and Godrej Properties (0.06%).
The PSU index was at 7,620.64, up by 36.11 points or by 0.48%. The major gainers were Bank Of India(2.92%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.69%), Bank Of Baroda (1.04%), BEML (0.13%) and Balmer Lawrie & Company (0.08%).
The Power index was at 1,949.30, up by 6.92 points or by 0.36%. The major gainers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.69%), C E S C (1.16%), Adani Power (1.1%), Reliance Infrastructure (0.3%) and Crompton Greaves (0.23%).
On the other hand, the Metal index was at 10,568.49, down by 38.84 points or by 0.37%. The major losers were Sesa Goa (1.47%), Steel Authority Of India (0.85%), Coal India (0.56%), NMDC (0.29%) and Bhushan Steel (0.13%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,137 advances against 1,007 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Jet Airways (India) topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 354.81 million. It was followed by Suzlon Energy (Rs. 292.76 million), Zee Entertainment Enterprises (Rs. 256.11 million) and State Bank Of India (Rs. 224.25 million).
The volume chart was led by Suzlon Energy with trades of over 12.81 million shares. It was followed by I F C I (2.81 million), Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.33 million) and Manappuram Finance (1.63 million).
