Sensex trades sluggish; ONGC, Sterlite, Hero Motocorp fall

Indian equities aretradingon alack luster note amid choppy trades. Oil & gas, IT and PSU stocks witnessed profit booking, while metal and FMCG stocks gained.
At 11.52 a.m., the Sensex was trading down 27.57 points or 0.15% at 18,818.69 with 17 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 9.25 points or 0.16% at 5,729.50 with 29 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a decline of 13.51 points or 0.07% at 18,832.75, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 7.65 points or 0.13%, at 5,731.10.
Sensex Movers
Oil & Natural Gas Corporation contributed fall of 15.93 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (11.62 points), ICICI Bank (9.42 points), Larsen & Toubro (5.42 points) and Tata Motors (3.32 points).
However, ITC contributed rise of 6.48 points in the Sensex. It was followed by HDFC Bank (5.38 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (2.69 points), Tata Steel (2.17 points) and Grasim Industries (1.86 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Jindal Steel & Power (1.02%), Hindalco Industries (0.88%), Tata Power Company (0.84%), Bajaj Auto (0.79%), Tata Steel (0.64%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.56%).
On the other hand, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.30%), Sterlite Industries (India) (1.12%), Hero Motocorp (0.93%), Infosys (0.84%), ICICI Bank (0.66%), and Tata Motors (0.63%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Midcap index was at 6722.12 down by 4.83 points or by 0.07%. The major losers were Alstom India (1.14%), Aban Offshore (1.1%), ABG Shipyard (0.78%), A I A Engineering (0.2%) and CORE Education and Technologies (0.15%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Oil & Gas index was at 8,249.18, down by 47.18 points or by 0.57%. The major losers were Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.3%), Gujarat State Petronet (1.45%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (0.86%), Oil India (0.35%) and G A I L (India) (0.01%).
The IT index was at 5,770.14, down by 31.94 points or by 0.55%. The major losers were H C L Technologies (0.74%), Mphasis (0.5%), Hexaware Technologies (0.18%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.15%) and Oracle Financial Services Software (0.05%).
The PSU index was at 7,258.12, down by 33.95 points or by 0.47%. The major losers were Allahabad Bank(2.39%), Andhra Bank (1.93%), Bank Of India (1.53%), Bank Of Baroda (0.24%) and BEML (0.2%).
On the other hand, the IPO index was at 1,717.70, up by 6.01 points or by 0.35%. The major gainers were Bedmutha Industries (2.46%), Acropetal Technologies (2.37%), C.Mahendra Exports (1.84%), BS TransComm (0.32%) and Coal India (0.01%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 1,203 advances against 1,243 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
United Spirits topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,301.34 million. It was followed by State Bank Of India (Rs. 575.04 million), L&T Finance Holdings (Rs. 202.28 million) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (Rs. 164.53 million).
The volume chart was led by Cals Refineries with trades of over 13.41 million shares. It was followed by Kingfisher Airlines (5.37 million), Sujana Universal Industries (3.86 million) and Unitech (3.78 million).
