Sensex trades flat; Mid and small-caps outperform

Indian markets recovered marginally on Wednesday snapping earlier losses. At 11.05 pm, the Sensex was trading up 28.76 points or 0.16% at 18,459.61 with 21 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 3.30 points or 0.06% at 5,601.20 with 31 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 5.94 points or 0.03% at 18,436.79, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 1.15 points or 0.02%, at 5,596.75.
Sensex Movers
Tata Motors contributed rise of 10.38
points in the Sensex. It was followed by Mahindra & Mahindra
(7.08 points), Maruti Suzuki India (5.88 points), Housing
Development Finance Corporation (5.07 points) and Wipro (5.05
points).
However, Larsen & Toubro contributed fall of 12.59 points in the Sensex. It was followed by H D F C Bank (5.43 points), Hindustan Unilever (5.31 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (5.02 points) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.07 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Dr Reddy"S Laboratories (2.85%), Maruti Suzuki India (2.55%), Wipro (2.09%), Tata Motors (1.80%), Cipla (1.57%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (1.50%).
On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.27%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.19%), Larsen & Toubro (1.14%), G A I L (India) (1.06%), Hindustan Unilever (0.76%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (0.73%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.34% and 0.29% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allahabad Bank(1.33%), A I A Engineering (1.2%), Aban Offshore (0.74%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.21%) and Amtek Auto (0.14%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aarti Industries (4.65%), Trident (1.14%), Styrolution ABS (India) (1.08%), Action Construction Equipment (0.6%) and Adhunik Metaliks (0.34%).
Sectors in Limelight
The HC index was at 7,600.72, up by 109.29 points or by 1.46%. The major gainers were Biocon (2.84%), Divis Laboratories (1.79%), Cipla (1.57%), Cadila Healthcare (0.36%) and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (0.14%).
The Auto index was at 10,271.37, up by 121.47 points or by 1.20%. The major gainers were Mahindra & Mahindra (1.5%), Bajaj Auto (0.69%), Hero Motocorp (0.57%), Cummins India (0.35%) and Ashok Leyland (0.22%).
The Consumer Durables index was at 6,938.12, up by 39.76 points or by 0.58%. The major gainers were Whirlpool Of India (3.46%), C.Mahendra Exports (1.56%), Blue Star (1.27%), Titan Industries (0.85%) and Rajesh Exports (0.16%).
On the other hand, the Capital Goods index was at 10,838.15, down by 66.39 points or by 0.61%. The major losers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.27%), Alstom T&D India (0.88%), BEML (0.83%), Alstom India (0.42%) and Crompton Greaves (0.12%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,167 advances against 1,024 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 381.49 million. It was followed by United Spirits (Rs. 242.07 million), Maruti Suzuki India (Rs. 157.68 million) and Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 150.11 million).
The volume chart was led by TV18 Broadcast with trades of over 2.32 million shares. It was followed by Kingfisher Airlines (1.68 million), Veer Energy and Infrastructure (1.58 million) and Cals Refineries (1.46 million).
