Sensex trades slightly higher; Sterlite Inds, Hero Motocorp rise

Indian markets continued to trade on a flat note amid volatility led by gains seen in oil & gas, metal and auto stocks.
At 11.59 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 46.59 points or 0.25% at 18,756.61 with 19 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 13.35 points or 0.23% at 5,704.75 with 30 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 2.39 points or 0.01% at 18,712.41, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 2.60 points or 0.05%, at 5,688.80.
Sensex Movers
Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed rise of 18.63 points in the Sensex. It was followed by ITC (12.69 points), Reliance Industries (10.75 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (6.61 points) and Mahindra & Mahindra (5.42 points).
However, Infosys contributed fall of 8.93 points in the Sensex. It was followed by State Bank Of India (3.6 points), Tata Motors (3.43 points), Hindustan Unilever (3.09 points) and Larsen & Toubro (3.05 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Sterlite Industries (India) (2.69%), Hero Motocorp (1.68%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.39%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.17%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (0.94%), and Hindalco Industries (0.84%).
On the other hand, Dr Reddy's Laboratories (1.63%), Maruti Suzuki India (1.02%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.66%), Infosys (0.65%), Tata Motors (0.57%), and State Bank Of India (0.50%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Midcap index was at 6646.21 down by 2.88 points or by 0.04%. The major losers were Alstom India (1.47%), AIA Engineering (0.82%), Aban Offshore (0.54%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.42%) and ABG Shipyard (0.33%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Oil & Gas index was at 8,508.26, up by 51.82 points or by 0.61%. The major gainers were GAIL (India) (0.65%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (0.35%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (0.33%), Indian Oil Corporation (0.23%) and Cairn India (0.18%).
The Metal index was at 10,305.93, up by 50.20 points or by 0.49%. The major gainers were Sesa Goa (1.56%), Hindalco Industries (0.84%), Hindustan Zinc (0.46%), Steel Authority Of India (0.43%) and Coal India (0.42%).
The Realty index was at 1,827.76, down by 13.86 points or by 0.75%. The major losers were DB Realty (2.63%), Indiabulls Real Estate (2.23%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (0.87%), DLF (0.34%) and Oberoi Realty (0.02%).The TECk index was at 3,309.70, down by 6.28 points or by 0.19%. The major losers were Reliance MediaWorks (0.99%), Idea Cellular (0.74%), Dish TV India (0.55%), DB Corp (0.3%) and Bharti Airtel (0.26%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 1,253 advances against 1,237 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Adani Enterprises topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,833.50 million. It was followed by Standard Chartered PLC (Rs. 1,179.11 million), Infosys (Rs. 420.39 million) and Adani Power (Rs. 295.22 million).
The volume chart was led by Standard Chartered PLC with trades of over 11.45 million shares. It was followed by Adani Enterprises (8.26 million), Kingfisher Airlines (6.95 million) and Adani Power (6.22 million).
