Sensex trades flat; Sterlite, Wipro, HDFC rise

Indian equities flat with positive bias on Thursday ahead of F&O expiry today. At 10.03 a.m, the Sensex was trading up 10.30 points or 0.06% at 18,720.32 with 16 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 0.80 points or 0.01% at 5,692.20 with 27 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 2.39 points or 0.01% at 18,712.41, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 2.60 points or 0.05%, at 5,688.80.
Sensex Movers
Housing Development Finance Corporation
contributed rise of 15.02 points in the Sensex. It was followed by
Reliance Industries (14.97 points), Oil & Natural Gas
Corporation (7.61 points), Sterlite Industries (India) (4.75
points) and Wipro (3.23 points).
However, Infosys contributed fall of 8.83 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (7.78 points), I T C (4.43 points), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (3.36 points) and Larsen & Toubro (2.85 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Sterlite Industries (India) (2.59%), Wipro (1.27%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.12%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.09%), Reliance Industries (0.87%), and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.63%).
On the other hand, Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (1.05%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.96%), Infosys (0.64%), Jindal Steel & Power (0.61%), I C I C I Bank (0.55%), and Hindustan Unilever (0.39%) were the major losers in the Sensex.
Sectors in Limelight
The Oil & Gas index was at 8,515.18, up by 58.74 points or by 0.69%. The major gainers were Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.09%), Petronet LNG (0.85%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (0.38%), G A I L (India) (0.3%) and Cairn India (0.07%).
The Metal index was at 10,313.97, up by 58.24 points or by 0.57%. The major gainers were Coal India (0.53%), Hindustan Zinc (0.53%), Hindalco Industries (0.49%), Bhushan Steel (0.43%) and NMDC (0.4%).
The FMCG index was at 5,801.05, down by 21.53 points or by 0.37%. The major losers were Jubilant FoodWorks (1.93%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) (0.83%), Hindustan Unilever (0.39%), United Breweries (0.31%) and I T C (0.24%).The HC index was at 7,580.08, down by 16.94 points or by 0.22%. The major losers were Biocon (1.1%), Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (1.05%), Ranbaxy Laboratories (0.89%), Cipla (0.32%) and Piramal Enterprises (0.12%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,001 advances against 750 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Adani Enterprises topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,822.94 million. It was followed by Standard Chartered PLC (Rs. 1,178.36 million), Infosys (Rs. 381.67 million) and Adani Power (Rs. 292.93 million).
The volume chart was led by Standard Chartered PLC with trades of over 11.43 million shares. It was followed by Adani Enterprises (8.14 million), Adani Power (6.13 million) and Kingfisher Airlines (5.05 million).
