Sensex, Nifty fall 0.4%; FMCG, CD, Auto drop

Indian equities continue to trade in a sluggish manner led by losses seen in FMCG,consumer durables and auto stocks.At 2.28 pm, the Sensex was trading down 71.84 points or 0.38% at 18,721.60 with 23 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 21.70 points or 0.38% at 5,695.45 with 39 components falling.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 10.18 points or 0.05% at 18,803.62, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 1.50 points or 0.03%, at 5,715.65.
Sensex Movers
I T C contributed fall of 28.13 points
in the Sensex. It was followed by H D F C Bank (13.42 points),
Infosys (13.13 points), Reliance Industries (9.5 points) and Oil
& Natural Gas Corporation (6.04 points).
However, Larsen & Toubro contributed rise of 20.52 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (7.95 points), Bharti Airtel (1.43 points), Hindustan Unilever (1.09 points) and Housing Development Finance Corporation (0 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Larsen & Toubro (1.91%), I C I C I Bank (0.56%), Coal India (0.53%), Bharti Airtel (0.35%), Cipla (0.30%), and Dr Reddy"S Laboratories (0.23%).
On the other hand, Hero Motocorp (1.80%), I T C (1.53%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.52%), Tata Power Company (1.04%), G A I L (India) (1.02%), and Hindalco Industries (1.00%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps remained flat.The major losers in the BSE Midcap were Amtek India (1.93%), Alstom India (1.79%), Andhra Bank (0.92%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.6%) and Allcargo Logistics (0.19%).The major losers in the BSE Smallcap were Adhunik Metaliks (2.01%), Reliance MediaWorks (0.85%), Trident (0.68%), Advanta India (0.61%) and Aarti Industries (0.43%).
Sectors in Limelight
The FMCG index was at 5,821.79, down by 50.18 points or by 0.85%. The major losers were I T C (1.53%), United Spirits (1.46%), Nestle India (1.09%), Jubilant FoodWorks (1.08%) and Colgate-Palmolive (India) (0.58%).
The Consumer Durables index was at 7,240.40, down by 59.43 points or by 0.81%. The major losers were C.Mahendra Exports (3.42%), Rajesh Exports (1.94%), Blue Star (1.86%), Whirlpool Of India (0.38%) and Bajaj Electricals (0.13%).
The Auto index was at 10,161.95, down by 68.59 points or by 0.67%. The major losers were Hero Motocorp (1.8%), Exide Industries (0.98%), Bharat Forge (0.51%), Bajaj Auto (0.51%) and Ashok Leyland (0.43%).
On the other hand, the Capital Goods index was at 11,331.60, up by 119.12 points or by 1.06%. The major gainers were A I A Engineering (3.62%), Larsen & Toubro (1.91%), BEML (1.61%), Praj Industries (0.54%) and Alstom T&D India (0.42%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was negative with 1,270 advances against 1,465 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
Standard Chartered PLC topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,237.33 million. It was followed by Adani Enterprises (Rs. 1,211.24 million), Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 605.65 million) and State Bank Of India (Rs. 489.23 million).
The volume chart was led by Cals Refineries with trades of over 25.08 million shares. It was followed by Standard Chartered PLC (12.03 million), Adani Enterprises (5.39 million) and Firstsource Solutions (5.23 million).
