Sensex, Nifty up 0.8%; L&T, Sterlite, Tata Power rise

Indian markets traded highertracking strong Asian cues and sustained buying activity is being witnessedin index heavyweights. Healthcare, metal and capital goods stocks led the advance.
At 11.49 a.m., the Sensex was trading up 154.90 points or 0.83% at 18,863.88 with 23 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 45.35 points or 0.80% at 5,721.35 with 41 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 87.27 points or 0.47% at 18,796.25, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a rise of 32.15 points or 0.57%, at 5,708.15.
Sensex Movers
Larsen & Toubro contributed rise of 22.89 points in the Sensex. It was followed by ICICI Bank (20.97 points), HDFC Bank (16.55 points), ITC (11.97 points) and Housing Development Finance Corporation (10.26 points).
However, Bharti Airtel contributed fall of 4.31 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Wipro (1.85 points), NTPC (1.45 points), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.16 points) and Reliance Communications (0.6 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Larsen & Toubro (2.21%), Sterlite Industries (India) (1.99%), Tata Power Company (1.87%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.85%), Dr Reddy"s Laboratories (1.84%), and Jindal Steel & Power (1.68%).
On the other hand, Bajaj Auto (1.59%), Bharti Airtel (0.98%), Wipro (0.67%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.49%), GAIL (India) (0.46%), and NTPC (0.44%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.89% and 0.87% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Aban Offshore (2.28%), ABG Shipyard (1.34%), Alok Industries (1.23%), AIA Engineering (0.88%) and Allcargo Logistics (0.26%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aarti Industries (6.46%), Trident (3.9%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (3.12%), A B G Infralogistics (1.52%) and Styrolution ABS (India) (0.71%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Consumer Durables index was at 7,157.11, up by 107.95 points or by 1.53%. The major gainers were Bajaj Electricals (4.76%), Rajesh Exports (1.1%), Gitanjali Gems (0.37%), Whirlpool Of India (0.35%) and Blue Star (0.14%).
The Capital Goods index was at 11,194.35, up by 161.57 points or by 1.46%. The major gainers were Crompton Greaves (1.26%), ABB (1%), A I A Engineering (0.88%), BEML (0.79%) and Bharat Electronics (0.39%).
The HC index was at 7,624.58, up by 108.57 points or by 1.44%. The major gainers were Biocon (2.95%), Divis Laboratories (1.94%), Cipla (1.57%), Cadila Healthcare (1.31%) and Aurobindo Pharma (0.56%).
The IPO index was at 1,679.07, up by 21.51 points or by 1.30%. The major gainers were BS TransComm (2.31%), Electrosteel Steels (2.04%), Career Point (1.68%), Coal India (0.97%) and Commercial Engineers and Body Builders Company (0.1%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,574 advances against 940 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
United Spirits topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 649.58 million. It was followed by State Bank Of India (Rs. 306.79 million), IVRCL (Rs. 264.40 million) and Shree Cement (Rs. 243.38 million).
The volume chart was led by JM Financial with trades of over 9.62 million shares. It was followed by Sujana Towers (5.69 million), IVRCL (5.55 million) and Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.19 million).
