Sensex, Nifty up over 1%; Realty surges 4.72%

Indian equities gained further ground on hopes of further reforms.Intense buying is being witnessed in realty stocks followed by banking, power and capital goods.At 1.01 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 212.33 points or 1.13% at 19,082.02 with 21 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 68.45 points or 1.19% at 5,799.70 with 40 components gaining.

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 70.06 points or 0.37% at 18,939.75, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a rise of 20.30 points or 0.35%, at 5,751.55.

Sensex Movers

ICICI Bank contributed rise of 51.21 points in the Sensex. It was followed by HDFC Bank (26.6 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (25.05 points), ITC (17.85 points) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (15.62 points).

However, Infosys contributed fall of 5.04 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (3.4 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (2.49 points), Hero Motocorp (2.25 points) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.48 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Bharat Heavy Electricals (6.55%), ICICI Bank (3.48%), Dr Reddy"s Laboratories (2.19%), Bharti Airtel (2.18%), Tata Steel (2.10%), and GAIL (India) (2.03%).

On the other hand, Hero Motocorp (0.97%), Cipla (0.91%), Coal India (0.67%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.56%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.37%), and Infosys (0.33%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.10% and 0.90% respectively.The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Alstom India (2.79%), Aban Offshore (1.06%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.37%), Alok Industries (0.22%) and Amara Raja Batteries (0.18%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Styrolution ABS (India) (5.11%), Aarti Industries (1.41%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (1.18%), Trident (0.53%) and Aanjaneya Lifecare (0.21%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,941.54, up by 88.71 points or by 4.79%. The major gainers were D B Realty (9.97%), Indiabulls Real Estate (8.13%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (6.4%), DLF (4.57%) and Godrej Properties (1.64%).

The Bankex index was at 13,397.77, up by 291.72 points or by 2.23%. The major gainers were Federal Bank (3.05%), HDFC Bank (1.88%), Bank Of Baroda (1.86%), Bank Of India (1.44%) and Canara Bank (0.36%).

The Power index was at 2,101.23, up by 42.34 points or by 2.06%. The major gainers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (6.55%), Crompton Greaves (3.9%), Adani Power (3.32%), Reliance Infrastructure (1.77%) and ABB (1.03%).

On the other hand, the HC index was at 7,586.91, down by 15.68 points or by 0.21%. The major losers were Cadila Healthcare (2.51%), Aurobindo Pharma (1.23%), Biocon (0.91%), Cipla (0.91%) and Glaxo SmithKline Pharmaceuticals (0.04%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,735 advances against 1,034 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

State Bank Of India topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 573.72 million. It was followed by Reliance Capital (Rs. 428.14 million), Housing Development and Infrastructure (Rs. 417.34 million) and United Spirits (Rs. 404.11 million).

The volume chart was led by Cals Refineries with trades of over 16.64 million shares. It was followed by Lanco Infratech (7.44 million), IVRCL (6.39 million) and Housing Development and Infrastructure (3.89 million).
