Sensex trades down 42 points; Mid and small-caps outperform

Indian equities continue to trade in a lackluster manner on Monday. Realty, power and capital goods stocks traded higher.At 1.54 p.m., the Sensex was trading down 42.29 points or 0.23% at 18,710.54 with 15 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 15.70 points or 0.28% at 5,675.45 with 29 components falling.
European stocks dropped as Germany and France struggled to overcome a stalemate on the timing for banking union and as data added to concern about the strength of China"s economy. U.S. index futures and Asian shares also fell.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened flat with a rise of 3.48 points or 0.02% at 18,756.31, while the broad based NSE Nifty began flat with a gain of 0.80 points or 0.01%, at 5,691.95.
Sensex Movers
Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed fall of 34.09 points in the Sensex. It was followed by ITC (33.91 points), Hindustan Unilever (19.91 points), Reliance Industries (13.35 points) and Tata Consultancy Services (10.59 points).
However, Bharat Heavy Electricals contributed rise of 14.93 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (14.38 points), HDFC Bank (11.8 points), Larsen & Toubro (5.2 points) and Maruti Suzuki India (4.3 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Bharat Heavy Electricals (7.12%), Jindal Steel & Power (4.78%), Mahindra & Mahindra (3.37%), Hindalco Industries (2.08%), Maruti Suzuki India (1.98%), and Dr Reddy"S Laboratories (1.29%).
On the other hand, Hindustan Unilever (2.82%), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.43%), ITC (1.93%), Cipla (1.74%), G A I L (India) (1.22%), and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.21%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.65% and 1.08% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were ABG Shipyard (10.89%), Allcargo Logistics (3.85%), Aban Offshore (3.79%), AIA Engineering (2.07%) and Alstom India (0.77%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (2.56%), Adhunik Metaliks (1.05%), ABG Infralogistics (0.34%), Aanjaneya Lifecare (0.2%) and Action Construction Equipment (0.19%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Realty index was at 1,823.58, up by 46.14 points or by 2.60%. The major gainers were Godrej Properties (3.6%), Indiabulls Real Estate (2.88%), Anant Raj Industries (2.72%), D B Realty (2.01%) and DLF (0.45%).
The Power index was at 2,033.25, up by 43.14 points or by 2.17%. The major gainers were Adani Power (7.89%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (7.12%), Crompton Greaves (6.27%), Reliance Infrastructure (3.99%) and ABB (1.96%).
On the other hand, the FMCG index was at 5,225.78, down by 69.9 points or by 1.32%. The major losers were Hindustan Unilever (2.82%), ITC (1.93%), Colgate-Palmolive (India) (1.35%) and Tata Global Beverages (1.11%).
Market Breadth
Market breadth was positive with 1,642 advances against 1,169 declines.
Value and Volume Toppers
United Spirits topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 1,163.10 million. It was followed by State Bank Of India (Rs. 948.94 million), Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 481.47 million) and Reliance Capital (Rs. 434.16 million).
The volume chart was led by Lanco Infratech with trades of over 10.21 million shares. It was followed by Suzlon Energy (5.92 million), Cals Refineries (5.11 million) and Transgene Biotek (4.37 million).
