Indian equities rallied to 3-year high on Friday led bymetal,
banking and capital goods stocks. At 2.19 pm, the Sensex was
trading up 429.92 points or 2.11% at 20,845.43 with 27 components
gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 126.85 points
or 2.10% at 6,172.70 with 48 components gaining.
The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a gain of
71.27 points or 0.35% at 20,486.78, while the broad based NSE Nifty
started with a rise of 25.05 points or 0.41%, at 6,070.90.
I C I C I Bank contributed rise of
63.45 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Housing Development
Finance Corporation (50.49 points), H D F C Bank (50.44 points),
Larsen & Toubro (46.74 points) and Reliance Industries (44.29
However, Sterlite Industries (India) contributed fall of 0
points in the Sensex. It was followed by ACC (0.61 points), Bharat
Heavy Electricals (1.47 points), Hindustan Unilever (2.16 points)
and Reliance Communications (2.29 points).
Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Steel (5.66%),
Larsen & Toubro (4.47%), I C I C I Bank (3.81%), Hindalco
Industries (3.24%), Housing Development Finance Corporation
(3.11%), and H D F C Bank (3.07%).
On the other hand, Bajaj Auto (0.37%), and Cipla (0.07%) were
the biggest losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger
counterparts gaining 1% and 0.65% respectively.The major gainers in
the BSE Midcap were A B G Shipyard (2.32%), Allahabad Bank (1.76%),
Aban Offshore (1.72%), Amtek Auto (1.49%) and Alstom India
(0.14%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Action
Construction Equipment (7.87%), Reliance MediaWorks (3.64%),
Adhunik Metaliks (1.13%), Aarti Industries (0.92%) and A2Z
Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.85%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Metal index was at 9,050.81, up by 322.54 points or by
3.70%. The major gainers were Hindustan Zinc (3.49%), Hindalco
Industries (3.24%), JSW Steel (3.13%), Jindal Steel & Power
(1.56%) and Coal India (0.93%).
The Bankex index was at 12,187.24, up by 396.06 points or by
3.36%. The major gainers were Federal Bank (3.7%), H D F C Bank
(3.07%), Bank Of Baroda (2.76%), Canara Bank (2.63%) and Bank Of
The Capital Goods index was at 8,433.55, up by 252.39 points or
by 3.09%. The major gainers were BEML (1.83%), Bharat Heavy
Electricals (0.72%), A B B India (0.33%), Bharat Electronics
(0.29%) and Alstom India (0.14%).
Market breadth was positive with 1,404 advances against 1,005
Value and Volume Toppers
Tata Steel topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of
Rs. 653.16 million. It was followed by Reliance Industries (Rs.
528.03 million), Larsen & Toubro (Rs. 524.27 million) and Tata
Consultancy Services (Rs. 479.17 million).
The volume chart was led by Spicejet with trades of over 5.99
